Humberto López

The story of a living legend, a Hispanic character with Mexican roots in our community, begins with:

"Thank God I was able to start working at age 11, selling newspapers, so I could help my family"
 • Answer given by Mr. Humberto López, when asked about his childhood and youth. He was born on November 27, 1945, in the city of Nogales, Arizona. Mexican father and Mexican / German mother. He"s the oldest of six brothers, when his father passed away in Obregon, Sonora, Humberto became the support of his family.

He returns to the United States and sees his mother in need of public assistance, it forged in his mind as a child, that he would someday be a successful man. With the examples and teachings of his uncle Elbert Schultz, whom he saw as a father figure and faith inculcated by his mother, they were basic foundations for strengthening and coping with his childhood and youth. "I did not play, I worked after school.

I don"t really remember how I fulfilled my tasks in those days." I did not have a chance to play because I worked up to 40 hours a week after school. He attended elementary school in Mexico; and his advanced level in math, led him to excel in his future classes in Arizona. He entered Cochise College in Douglas, AZ., And graduated from theUniversity of Arizona with a bachelor"s degree in Business Administration with a minor in accounting in 1969.One of his greatest challenges was to overcome his shyness and nervousness.

Dale Carnegie"s book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living helped him to overcome those challenges and to pursue his goals. "I will not take a risk, if I know I will not be able to accept the outcome"  After graduating, he takes one of his first risks that would change his life completely. He accepts a job in the city of Los Angeles, California, with the company of accountants: Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, in the auditing department. Climbing in a fast and impressive way, allowing him to start his own company in 1975. In 1971, he gets a loan of $ 1,000 for his first investment, six months later he sells it with a profit of $ 3,000. Paying the loan and reinvesting the profits, which gives birth to HSL Properties. As it is known; Progress and success occurs when there are skilled, hardworking and courageous leaders who give opportunities to improve their future. One of my greatest achievements is to have been able to employ more than 1,000 employees and have established the foundation: THE H.S. LOPEZ FAMILY FOUNDATION.

The Foundation focuses on providing incentives, focused on health, education and help the neediest in order to improve their lives. "For me it is a great satisfaction, to give and to be able to help, as they helped me when I needed it" Mr. Lopez is proud to be of Mexican origin. He believes that the opportunities offered by this country should be taken advantage of and living in this region is a blessing. "The economy of Tucson is on the right track, we have big companies that employ thousands of workers and new ones to come in. The cost of living is not very expensive and the weather is lovely"             • Mr. López believes that regulatory reductions will open doors to new businesses and create more jobs. He sees technological advancement and increased use of artificial intelligence, as a phenomenon that can no longer be stopped.

It advises that we must constantly prepare ourselves to be able to accept and be up-to-date with technology. "He thinks that creating an economic balance in the world is extremely important and necessary to be able to create, manufacture, and produce national products for national export and consumption, and at the same time to consume imported products, creating jobs in this country and abroad" Here we are all the same, we have the same opportunities, we just have to know how to take advantage of them! It also ensures that a multicultural community can enrich our nation. As part of the interview we asked him if he would ever be interested in entering politics, and this was his response: NO, politics is not for me. I"ve never dreamed of getting into that business.

I like to serve the community doing what I like and enjoy, with the achievements of my work. The trajectory of Humberto S. Lopez, reflects the efforts, approach dedication and confidence in itself. With many projects this year, among them, is the acquisition of two new hotels, as well as the remodeling of the square in downtown Tucson (Downtown), and the construction of hundreds of luxury apartments in downtown Tucson. He plans to remain active for the rest of his life; this if God allows it and continues to work, not out of necessity but out of pleasure. Mr. López and HSL Properties have received countless awards and nominations including the following:

Board of Directors of non-profit organizations; * Pinnacle West,  Arizona Public Service, * SunCor Development Corporation, * Capitol Bancorp, * Sunrise Bank Holding Company, * Bank of Tucson. Non-profit organizations: Dioceses of Tucson Finance Council, * United Way, * Metropolitan * YMCA, * 88 Crime, * Downtown Tucson Partnership, * National Board of Advisors, * University of Arizona Eller College, * Salpointe Catholic High School, * Sarver Heart Center, * University of Arizona Foundation. Some of his acknowledgments: * Tucson Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, * Tucson Hispanic Chamber of the Year, * Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award, * City of Hope Man and Woman of the Year, * LULAC Man of the Year , * City of Tucson Outstanding Citizen. The most recent recognition to Mr. Humberto Lopez, was this last February of 2017: THE REAL ESTATE LEGEND OF 2017, "awarded by CCIM (Tucson Certified Commercial Investment Member).  This award is something extraordinary; and that a Mexican American, like Humberto S. Lopez, has received it, must fill us all with pride as Hispanics, it assures us that hard work and effort is rewarded. A real pride, no doubt! He thanks his family, especially his wife Czarina, his daughters Iovanna and Iliana, his nephew Omar, his right hand, as well as his team, employees and of course his friends for all the support they"ve given him in all these years of life and career.

To conclude this pleasant and very interesting interview, that it was impossible for me to be able to say everything in these lines, since there is so much to speak and say about Mr. Lopez"s career. He gives advice to our young people: "Keep studying, education is fundamental to achieve our goals, we must not be underestimated, we must always be optimistic, never think of losing and if you lose accept it and start again, take risks, be grateful and never forget our roots. Remember: "Money is not everything in life, but without money there is no food" As you can see, this is only a little bit of what must be said about this great character, who, being Mexican, has managed to climb to the top, thanks to his dedication, perseverance, faith and who has never lost his humility and his gift of people. Arizona Bilingual has recognition and pride to have the power to share a little of the life of Mr. Humberto H. Lopez.
