Dr. Russell Cohen of Tucson Orthopedic Institute is one of the first surgeons in the city to perform robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement procedures using Mako, an advanced robotic technology that helps surgeons provide a higher level of patient-specific implant alignment and positioning. Tucson Orthopaedic Institute and Tucson Medical Center are working together to provide this state-of-the-art technology.
Through CT-based 3D modeling of bone anatomy, surgeons can now use the Mako System to create a personalized surgical plan based on a patient"s unique anatomy and virtually modify the surgical plan intra-operatively as needed.
"Mako is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed, helping surgeons build an accurate pre-operative plan, eliminate variables and use the robotic-arm to facilitate a more precise implant fit," said Dr. Cohen. "Our surgical team has information at our fingertips that we"ve never had access to before."
Melissa Anderson understands first-hand the difference patients may experience. She first received a manual total knee replacement on her right knee in 2010 and returned several weeks ago for a Mako robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement on her left side. She says the recovery process following her surgery could not be more opposite, as she"s experienced far less pain this time and a much faster recovery process.
